The School Board
The School Board consists of seven trustees, each elected to a three-year term. These unpaid representatives set policy and maintain legal authority for the operation of the school district.
School board elections take place every May for 2-3 new trustees. Elections are currently "by seat," in which candidates must choose a particular seat—and a particular opponent—to run against. This fuels an atmosphere of pettiness and animosity that undermines Amityville's "friendly village" image.
On March 6, 2024, our group submitted a petition to change to an "at large" system, in which candidates run for all open seats. We believe this will shift focus away from "who is trying to unseat who" and onto the policy platforms of the candidates themselves.
Our group is coalescing behind 3 candidates for the upcoming election on May 21. Names, bios, and policy platforms will be posted in mid-April.
